The Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH) welcomes the new federal government’s focus on the housing crisis as a top national priority in today’s Speech from the Throne. CAEH welcomes the government’s commitment to urgent, coordinated action to make housing more affordable and notes that this work must also support those most harmed by our housing crisis: people experiencing homelessness.
CAEH appreciates the Throne Speech’s strong focus on housing affordability. Homelessness is a housing problem, and the solution to homelessness is housing. We also share the conviction expressed in the speech that “the economy is only truly strong when it serves everyone.”
As the Speech from the Throne noted, Canada is facing historic challenges, but this also means we have an opportunity for big changes. With 53% of Canadians worried about losing their home or becoming homeless because of trade turmoil, CAEH and the entire housing sector are ready to partner with the federal government to move forward with the courage and speed Canadians need and expect to address this crisis. With strong leadership and a formal, coordinated response from federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal governments, we can deliver the promise of a Canada where everyone has a place to call home.
