TORONTO, November 2, 2022 — More than 1,600 delegates from across Canada and the world will be gathering in person in Toronto and virtually for the next three days at the National Conference on Ending Homelessness – CAEH22.
“A new wave of homelessness is hitting Canada caused by a number of overlapping crises happening right now,” says Tim Richter, President and CEO of the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness. “The housing crisis, poisoned drug supply and COVID-19 had already devastated Canadians experiencing homelessness and those working in the sector. Now, the escalating cost-of-living crisis is forcing more people into homelessness across the country.”
“Despite this, there is hope and action,” says Don Iveson, co-chair of CAEH and former mayor of Edmonton. “Communities across the country are having success in reducing and ending homelessness. By learning from their successes and the methods that are working – and with increased government support – we can stop this new wave of homelessness and support those already experiencing it into housing.”
At the conference, participants will share their successes, lessons and insights from the communities and organizations working to end homelessness across Canada and abroad. It’s set to be both a challenging and inspiring event, empowering people working to end homelessness with the skills, knowledge, and new connections they need to be successful.
Participants include front-line workers, community leaders, researchers, advocates, government officials – and importantly, over 150 people with lived experience of homelessness will be joining the conference and will guide and inform the discussions and lessons over the course of the event.
This year’s program features 85 sessions in 14 streams, five keynotes, delivered by more than 250 national and international experts. The program is crammed with some great innovations on everything from responding to unsheltered homelessness to transforming emergency shelters, achieving the right to housing, responding to homelessness for women, advancing Reconciliation, responding to homelessness in rural communities, integrating health care and homeless systems and much more.
